ASUU Strike Update Today – Demands to Call Off Strike
Calls for a N30 billion start-up grant for new universities
“University proliferation is an embarrassment. Every senator now has a bill in which they demand that universities be established in their districts without adequate funding provisions.
“We propose that the law requiring the National Universities Commission, NUC, to grant new university licenses be amended to ensure that at least an N30 billion start-up grant is kept somewhere.”
“Some state governments that owe lecturers in their universities more than six months in salary arrears are also establishing new ones, which is a huge joke.” “Where are they going to get the money to fund them?”
The job of the University Senate is being taken over by JAMB.
The union also criticized the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, or JAMB, for its role in the admission of students to higher education institutions, particularly universities.
“It is the Senate of a university’s duty to admit students to the university,” he said. The matriculation examinations are administered by JAMB.
“Now, the board has assumed the role of the Senate and is going above and beyond its mandate. Admission is purely an academic matter, not a clerical one.”
When asked what would happen after the four-week warning strike ended, Osodeke said the union would assess the situation and decide what to do next.
